1 Pice, Mombasa, 1888
1 pice coin issued in the name of the British East Africa Company, which ruled Mombasa (not Kenya). Mombasa was a British protectorate from the 1820s, but was formally handed over to the East Africa Company in 1888, the same year that this coin was minted. Weighing scales - common in British East India Company coins, can also be seen on this coin. The currency of Mombasa was the rupee, equal in value (and based on) the Indian rupee. While strictly not an Indian coin, this coin was based on the Indian currency of the British period.
