James Brooke was a British adventurer who travelled to the Island of Borneo and was made the governor of the region of Sarawak within the island by the Sultan of Brunei in 1841, and was fully sovereign by 1842. He ruled Sarawak as an independent ruler (1842-1868), and was succeeded by his nephew (Charles Brooke, 1868-1917), who was in turn followed by his son, Charles Vyner Brooke (1917-1946). The Brooke family ruled Sarawak as a personal kingdom, and used a mix of British administrative practices alongside respect for local customs. In 1946, Sarawak was ceded to the British Empire and became a crown colony.
