1 Bolivar, Venezuela, 1989

  • Rs. 200.00

1 Bolivar banknote of Venezuela, printed in 1989. The obverse has an image of Simon Bolivar, facing to the right. His name, and title 'Liberator' encircles the portrait. The reverse carries the coat of arms of Venezuela, and a guilloche - a repeating, intricate, geometric pattern. The Venezuelan Bolivar (VEB) was the country's currency from 1879-2007 - making it one of the most stable currencies in South America - other countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru went through multiple currency changes during the 20th century. However, the VEB lost value rapidly in the late 1990s and early 2000s under socialist policies of Hugo Chavez, and was replaced by Bolivar Fuerte (Strong Bolivar) in 2008. The Bolivar Fuerte had become worthless by 2018, and was replaced by Bolivar Soberano (Sovereign Bolivar) in 2018.

Simon Bolivar is considered a founding father of Venezuela - and for much of South America - and is frequently depicted on Venezuelan banknotes. He has also been featured on banknotes of Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Panama.
