1 Boliviano, Bolivia, 1952

  • Rs. 500.00

1 Bolivano banknote of Bolivia, issued in 1958. The obverse carries a portrait of Simon Bolivar. Simon Bolivar is perhaps the second most featured person on banknotes, after Queen Elizabeth II. These notes were printed under the monetary law of 1928 - date printed on right side - and were issued in 1952. The reverse carries the coat of arms of Bolivia within an elaborate pattern. These notes were printed by London based Waterlow and Sons.

Prior to 1928, Bolivia used the Peso Boliviano, which was based on silver. South America is very rich in silver, with Bolivia, Chile and Peru amongst the top producers of the metal today. The Potosi mine in present day Bolivia has been in production for over 400 years, and was the world's largest silver mine during the 17th century. A silver backed currency was natural. Silver prices fell in early 20th century, and Bolivia shifted to gold standard in 1928 - the date of the law on the note. It had to abandon the gold standard in 1931.
