1 Cent, Hong Kong (1961-95)

  • Rs. 150.00

1-cent uniface banknote of Hong Kong, with an early portrait of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse. These notes were printed from 1961-95 - to deal with coin shortages of the era. Exact dates were not printed on these notes. The note carries inscriptions in English and Chinese - denoting the special status of Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong island was ceded to UK by China in 1842, after the latter's defeat in the first opium war. China ceded further territories: Kowloon in 1860 (second opium war) and 'New Territories' in 1898. The first two were ceded in perpetuity, while New Territories were on a 99-year lease ending in 1997. Returning New Territories while keeping the rest was not practical - hence the entire area was returned to China in 1997. China promised 'One Country Two Systems' at the time for Hong Kong - the capitalist system and freedoms on the island would remain unchanged for 50 years (till 2047), but has violated the agreement.
