1 Dollar, Malaya, Japanese Invasion Money
1 dollar banknote of Malaya - issued by the Japanese, who invaded and occupied (1942-45) the region during the Second World War. The obverse mentions the denomination, and the issuing authority (Japanese government), and the design includes a breadfruit tree to the left and a coconut tree to the right. The reverse carries just the denomination (1), along with an intricate pattern - a security measure against counterfeiting.
Japan attacked the US base at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and invaded British possessions in Asia soon after, quickly over-running Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore and Burma. These banknotes were issued to serve as legal tender in areas they occupied, and were often printed in large numbers - making them relatively common despite their age.
Size: 140 mm* 67 mm
