1 Lira, Italy, 1944
1 Lira banknote of Italy, printed in 1944. The obverse has the image of a female head - personifying Italy - within a medallion. The reverse has green ornate guilloche design - repetitive and interlocking lines which also serve as an anti-counterfeiting measure.
These notes were issued in 1944 - after Italy had been partially liberated. Italy was originally a part of the Axis powers and an ally of Germany under Mussolini. However, Mussolini was overthrown in 1943, and the Italian government surrendered to the allies in September 1943. After this point, the South of Italy was under the Italian government, which operated under allied supervision, while the North remained under German control, governed by the puppet state of Italian Socialist Republic (RSI). These notes were issued by the Italian Government of the South.
