1 Peso (Convertible), Cuba, 2013
1 Convertible Peso (CUC) banknote of Cuba, printed in 2013. The CUC was introduced in 1994 as a hard currency substitute to replace US Dollars - foreign tourists were required to exchange their forex for CUC, which was then used for hotels, restaurants, and special stores catering to foreigners. CUC was used for luxury and/or imported goods. Regular Cubans were paid in Cuban Pesos (CUP), which were not usable in these special stores. The CUC - a special currency for foreigners - can also be seen as an indication of the economic failures of the communist system.
The obverse of the note features the Jose Marti Memorial, while the reverse has the scene of Jose Marti's death in battle. Jose Marti is Cuba's national hero, and died in battle against Spain.
Size: 150 mm* 70 mm
