1 Pound, Australia, 1953-60

  • Rs. 4,000.00

1 Pound banknote of Australia, printed 1953-60. Before adopting the Australian Dollar as currency in 1966, Australia used the Pound. The obverse of the note carries a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the right, and the Australian Coat of Arms on the top. This note has been signed by HC Coombs (Governor, Commonwealth Bank of Australia) - post 1960, this changed to the signature of the Governor, Reserve Bank of Australia, while other design elements remained more or less similar. This was the first Australian banknote with the image of the Queen - her accession to the throne in 1952 - and the portrait is a youthful one.

The reverse of the note features 2 portraits - Charles Stuart and Hilton Hume - both Australian explorers who mapped the continent's interior. The name of James Cook, and his Ship Endeavour - is also written on a medallion. James Cook sailed and mapped the entire eastern coast of Australia in 1770, leading to its colonization by Britain.
