1 Yen, Japan, 1944-45
1 Yen banknote of Japan, printed in 1944-45, in the closing years of World War II, during the Showa (1926-1989) era. Japanese historical eras are named after the reigning emperors, such as Meiji era(1862-1912), Taisho era (1912-1926), and Showa era (1926-1989). These notes don't carry a serial number - instead, they have a block number shared amongst many notes. The simplification was due to the war effort.
The obverse features the chrysanthemum seal, and a portrait of Takeuchi Sukune - a character from Japanese mythology who reputedly served 5 emperors and lived for over 300 years! He represents loyalty, stability, and wisdom, qualities that the government wanted to associated with Japan's currency. The reverse features a Japanese prayer hall.
