10 Drachma, Greece, 1940

10 Drachma banknote of Kingdom of Greece, printed in 1940. The obverse has the denomination to the right, and the portrait of Demeter, the Greek Goddess of harvest, to the left. The reverse features a view of the University of Athens. The Kingdom of Greece was established in 1832 - after Greece gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, and lasted till 1973, with a break from 1924-1935 - when a Republic was proclaimed. During World War II, Greece was under occupation of Axis powers (1941-44).
