10 Rupees, Nepal, Accession of King Gyanendra, 2002

  • Rs. 200.00

10 Rupee polymer banknote of Nepal, issued in 2002 on the occasion of accession of King Gyanendra (2001-08), the King of Nepal. The obverse carries a portrait of King Gyanendra to the left, a statue of Lord Changunarayan (a form of Vishnu) in the middle, and a transparent watermark window featuring the crown of Nepal on the left. Lettering around the watermark window mentions that this was issued in Vikram Samvat 2058, on occasion of King Gyanendra's accession. The reverse features a black buck family, and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Nepal to the right.

King Gyanendra was the last ruler of the Kingdom of Nepal - he initially ruled as a constitutional monarch, but seized power in 2005 - leading to widespread protests. He was forced to relinquish power to the parliament in 2006, and the monarchy itself was abolished in 2008. Interestingly, this was King Gyanendra's second reign - he briefly held the throne of Nepal as a child (1950-51), when his grandfather, King Tribhuvan, fled to India during the struggle against the Rana prime ministers.

Nepal faced a violent communist insurgency during his reign, which eventually ended with his abdication, the abolition of monarchy, and declaration of a secular republic.
