2 Rand, South Africa, 1978-1990
2 Rand banknote of South Africa, issued by the South African Reserve Bank (Suid-Afrikaanse Reserwebank). The obverse has the portrait of Jan van Riebeeck (1619–1677), the Dutch colonial administrator who founded Cape Town in 1652. The obverse has images of a power-line, while the reverse has the image of an industrial/chemical plant, probably an oil refinery. The notes are bilingual, with inscription in English and Afrikaans. The notes bear the signature of Gerhard de Kock, the governor of the Central Bank from 1981-89.
These notes were issued during the apartheid era (1948-1994). South Africa was a self-governing dominion within the British Empire from 1910. The National Party, which came to power in 1948, enforced racial segregation - which led to increasing international isolation. In 1961, South Africa left the British commonwealth, and adopted Rand as its currency. The apartheid era finally ended in 1994, and the black majority gained political power.
