2 Rupees, Sri Lanka, 1970
Two rupee banknote of Sri Lanka, issued in 1970, by the Central Bank of Ceylon. The obverse features King Parakkrama, or Parakrambahu I (1153-1186 AD), who unified Sri Lanka under a single kingdom after a long period of division. He is known for building a number of irrigation works, as well his patronage of Buddhism. The name Parakrambahu was adopted by many other subsequent rulers of Sri Lanka. The reverse features Medirigiriya Vatadage - a well preserved ancient Buddhist monument in Polonnaruwa. These notes were printed by London based Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company (1856-1990).
