250 Roubles, Republic of Armenia, 1919
250 Rouble banknote of the short lived Republic of Armenia (1918-20), which existed briefly after the collapse of the Russian Empire and before takeover by the Soviet Union. These notes were printed in 1919. The note has text in Russian as well as French. The front of the note has figures of two angels - one on either side - signifying rebirth and hope - important as this was just after the Armenian genocide perpetrated by the Turks/Ottoman Empire. The reverse has a figure of a woman on a spinning wheel, depicting labor and resilience. These notes were printed in London by Waterlow & Sons, a major British security printer.
After the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917, the Armenian National Council declared the establishment of the independent Republic of Armenia on May 28, 1918. The first Republic of Armenian was invaded by the Soviet Red Army in 1920, and the Armenian rouble was replaced by the Soviet Rouble.
