5 Rupee banknote of Sri Lanka, issued in 1974 - shortly after the country's name was changed from Ceylon to Sri Lanka. The obverse features King Parakkrama, or Parakrambahu I (1153-1186 AD), who unified Sri Lanka under a single kingdom after a long period of division. He is known for building a number of irrigation works, as well his patronage of Buddhism. The name Parakrambahu was adopted by many other subsequent rulers of Sri Lanka. The reverse features the a stone lion, which was a part of the throne of King Nissankamalla (1187-1196 AD). The Central Bank of Ceylon is named in Sinhala, Tamil and English.
