50 Pfennig, Weimar Germany, 1921

50 Pfennig banknote issued by the city of Osnabruck, a town in Northern Germany. The obverse features the Water Gate, a historical landmark of the city, while the reverse features the coat of arms of the city. These notes are 'notgeld' or emergency money, which became common in Germany and Austria after World War I, when coins went out of circulation (as the metal was worth more than face value), and paper money became worthless.
