5000 Mark, Germany, 1922
5,000 Mark banknote of Germany (Weimar Republic) printed in 1922. The obverse carries the "Portrait of the Merchant", a painting by famous German painter Albrecht Dürer. The obverse also bears intricate geometric designs, along with the red seal of the Reichsbank, with the German eagle on the left (top and bottom). The reverse carries the note's denomination, and the German eagle on the right (top and bottom).
This note is from the period of German hyperinflation of 1922-23. The hyperinflation was caused by the debt that Germany had taken on to finance the War, and was triggered by a Franco-Belgian occupation of the industrial district of Ruhr - to force Germany to pay a war indemnity. When prices rise by over 50% in a month, it is considered a case of hyperinflation. At its worst phase, prices of goods in Germany would change daily - sometimes the prices of food in a restaurant would change while the patrons were dining! The German hyperinflation and the consequent economic suffering was one of the factors that led to the rise of Hitler.
