Satu Rupiah, Indonesia, 1953

  • Rs. 700.00

Satu Rupiah, or One Rupiah banknote of Indonesia, printed in 1953. The obverse has the denomination in the center, with a coastal scene on the left and rice terraces on the right. The right features a volcanic mountain, of which Indonesia has many. These notes were printed by the Security Banknote Company of Philadelphia, USA.

These notes were issued shortly after Indonesia's independence (1949), and mark a full transition to local currency. Indonesia was ruled by the Dutch during the colonial era, and was occupied by the Japanese during the Second World War. The nationalist leadership of the country declared independence after the Japanese surrender in August 1945, but the Dutch didn't recognize Indonesia's independence till 1949. This political upheaval also affected the currency. During WW-II, the Japanese issued occupation notes - Guilden and Rupiah. From 1945 to 1949, Indonesia had 2 currencies - the Guilden issued by the Dutch used in the cities and the Rupiah issued by the Republic, used in Republic held areas. After 1949, the two currencies were used jointly for some time, and use of guilden was stopped entirely after 1951. This note is the second issue after independence.
