Satu Rupiah, Indonesia, 1968
Satu Rupiah (One Rupiah) banknote of Indonesia, printed in 1968. The obverse features a portrait of General Sudirman, an Indonesian military hero who played a key role in the independence struggle against the Dutch. The obverse features a woman seated on the ground creating copra.
These notes were issued in 1968, an year after Sukarno - regarded as Father of the Nation in Indonesia - was deposed from power. The new regime wanted to legitimize its power by invoking a revolutionary hero, rather than Sukarno's personality cult. General Sudirman was apolitical, symbolizing sacrifice and integrity, making him a unifying figure for a fractured nation. This was the last 1 Rupiah note of Indonesia - the denomination soon became worthless due to continued high inflation.
Size: 111 mm* 56 mm
