Before discovery of oil in 1938, Kuwait's economy was dependent upon pearl fisheries and maritime trade. Up to 1961, Kuwait was a British protectorate. Kuwait issued its first currency notes in 1961 - replacing the Persian Gulf Rupee. The first currency was issued by the Kuwait Currency board, and were replaced in 1968 by notes issued by the newly created Central Bank of Kuwait. These notes were demonetized in 1991 - In 1990, Kuwait was invaded an annexed by its larger neighbor Iraq, and large number of Kuwaiti banknotes were looted by the invading Iraqi forces. The invasion was eventually beaten back in early 1991 by a multinational force. Kuwait changed its currency soon after.
