1 Dinar, Yugoslavia, 1919
1 Dinar of Kingdom of Yugoslavia (originally known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes), which was formed in 1919 after the end of World War I. This comprised erstwhile Serbia, Montenegro, and parts of the Empire of Austria-Hungary which was dissolved after the war. The name of the country was changed to Yugoslavia in 1929.
The obverse features the portrait of a helmeted man, Miloš Obilić, a Serbian hero from the fourteenth century who assassinated the Ottoman Sultan Murad I during the Battle of Kosovo. This was the first currency issued by the new kingdom, and use of a pan-Slavic hero was an attempt to forge a shared national identity. The reverse of the note has multilingual text, including in French, which was the language of diplomacy in that era.
Size: 108 mm* 77 mm
