1 Drachma, Greece, Axis Occupation (1941)

  • Rs. 350.00

1 Drachma banknote of Greek State - the official designation of the collaboration government during occupation of Greece by the Axis powers (1941-44). The obverse has a seated statue of a philosopher, while the reverse features the image of an ancient Greek coin showing an owl (symbol of Athena).

During World War II, Italy invaded Greece in 1940 - and was repelled. In 1941, Germany came to Italy's help, and Greece was defeated. Greek territory was divided between Germany, Italy and Bulgaria, with a collaboration government in place. Exploitation by the Axis powers led to a famine in 1941-42, as well as hyperinflation. Greece was finally liberated in 1944 as German forces retreated following Soviet advances.
