1 Gourde Banknote of Haiti, printed in 1989. The note features an image of François-Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution. The reverse of the note features Haiti's coat of arms. 

Haiti was the first instance of a country where slaves rebelled and overthrew their European masters, and expelled them. However, the country was racked by political instability and international isolation, and could never prosper. Haitian revolutionaries also killed all Europeans, another reason for the long term poverty.
