1 Markka, Finland, 1918

1 Markka (Mark) banknote of Finland, issued in 1918, shortly after the country declared its independence from Russia in 1917. The obverse carries the denomination in two languages - Finnish and Swedish, and a large flower in the middle. The reverse carries intricate patterns, an anti-counterfeiting measure. 

Finland was a part of the Swedish Kingdom for over 600 years, and was ceded to Russia in 1809 after a war. In 1917, Finnish nationalists declared independence in the chaos of the Russian revolution. Finland was one of the many new countries formed as a result of the dissolution of old empires after the First World War.
