1 Ngultrum banknote of Bhutan, printed in 1974. The obverse features two dragons, on the left and the right side of the denomination. The reverse features a 4-petalled Buddhist symbol known as the Dorje. These notes were issued during the reign of King Jigme Singye Wangchuk (1972-2006). This was a part of the first banknotes to be ever issued by Bhutan. The inscription on the notes is in Latin and Tibetan scripts.

Bhutan is the only remaining monarchy in South Asia. The current Wangchuk dynasty was elected in 1907, and marks the transition of Bhutan from a dual (theological-aristocratic system) to a centralized monarchy. In 2008, Bhutan transitioned to a constitutional monarchy.
