1 Perper, Montenegro, 1914
1 Perper banknote issued by the Kingdom of Montenegro in July 1914 - weeks before the beginning of World War I. The obverse features an ornamental anchor at the top, along with other patterns, which serve as anti-counterfeiting measures. The reverse features a double headed eagle - part of the coat of arms of Montenegro, and common in several Slavic nations.
These notes were issued during the war when the country faced shortages of metal. Montenegro declared war on Austria-Hungary on August 6, 1914 - in solidarity with Serbia and Russia. It was eventually occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1916. After the war, Montenegro voted to merge with the Kingdom of Serbia.
