1 Pound, Rhodesia, 1966
1 Pound note of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), printed in 1966. The obverse features Queen Elizabeth in ceremonial attire, with the national coat of arms in the top center, with the denomination in the four corners. The reverse features Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the world.
These notes were issued shortly after the unilateral declaration of independence by Rhodesia in 1965 - Britain and the international community refused to recognized Rhodesia because of white minority rule. Rhodesia kept the Queen's portrait, though it was no longer a part of the British empire. The pound remained Rhodesia's currency till 1970, when the country shifted to the Rhodesian dollar. Rhodesia faced an insurgency (1964-79) by the majority black population, which eventually led to a transition to majority black rule.
