1 Rupee Banknote, Burma, 1948 (First Issue)

  • Rs. 4,200.00

One Rupee banknote of Burma (now Myanmar), issued 1948. This was the first banknote issued after independence. Burma maintained the old currency (Rupee) till 1952, when it was replaced by the kyat. The obverse of the note has a peacock towards the right, and the legend in Burmese language. The reverse side has the image of a sailboat on water, and  the legend in English. These notes were a radically different design from the notes used earlier in the colonial period, which were printed in British India and carried an image of King George VI. These banknotes were printed by Thomas de la Rue (TDLR) of London. The printer's name can be seen at the bottom center on the obverse.
