1 Rupee, Nepal, 1971-73
One rupee banknote of the Kingdom of Nepal, printed 1971-73. The obverse features an image of King Mahendra (1955-1972) and a temple with the Himalaya mountains in the background. The reverse features a traditional wooden swing. Nepal's monarchy was restored to power in 1951 under King Tribhuvan, Mahendra's father, from the Rana family which served as hereditary prime ministers. However, King Tribhuvan also gave up some powers of the monarchy to usher in an elected government - these reforms were reversed in 1960 under King Mahendra, who carried out a coup and brought in direct rule. King Mahendra was succeeded by his elder son, King Birendra, in 1972.
