10 shillings, Biafra, 1967-70
10 shilling banknote of the short-lived Republic of Biafra (1967-70), a partially recognized state in West Africa, and a breakaway region of Nigeria. Biafra declared its independence from Nigeria in 1967 and was recognized by Gabon, Tanzania, Haiti, Ivory Coast and Zambia, and also received covert support from a number of western countries. Biafra was one of the many unsuccessful rebellions in Africa by minority ethnic groups to form their own country. The obverse of the note shows a palm tree with a rising in the background, while the reverse features an industrial plant.
