100 Rupees, Pakistan (Bangla Issue), 1957-71

  • Rs. 550.00

100 Rupee banknote of Pakistan (pre-1971), with a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on the obverse and the Badshahi Mosque (built by Mughal ruler Aurangzeb) in Lahore on the reverse. These notes have the denomination in Bangla, in addition to the inscription in English and Urdu - signifying they are from undivided Pakistan.

In 1947, when Pakistan gained independence, it was two bifurcated parts, East and West Pakistan. While majority of the population was in the East, political (and military) power was in the West. In 1948, Urdu was declared the sole national language of Pakistan - which led to protests and riots. The 1956 constitution of Pakistan recognized Bengali and Urdu as national languages. This was the beginning of Bengali nationalism within Pakistan, eventually culminating with the independence war of 1971. These notes were demonetized in August 1971, over fears that the stocks of currency in East Pakistan could be used to destabilize Pakistan.
