20 Afghanis, Afghanistan, 1961
20 Afghani banknote of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. The obverse features King Muhammad Zahir, while the reverse has an image of the Independence monument in Kabul. These notes were printed in 1961, and were the last 20 Afghani notes to be issued with the King's portrait.
The Kingdom of Afghanistan was established in 1926 - the kingdom used Afghani as its currency - replacing the Afghan Rupee (1891-1925). Muhammad Zahir (1914-2007) was the last king of Afghanistan, and reigned from 1933 until his deposition in 1973, by his cousin Muhammad Daoud. Muhammad Daoud ended the monarchy and established a republic, and also plunged Afghanistan into a long civil war from which it has not fully recovered. King Zahir returned to Afghanistan in 2002, after Taliban was deposed, and was awarded the title of 'Father of the Nation' by the interim administration - a symbolic title.
