25 Pfennig, Osnabruck - Weimar Germany, 1921

25 pfennig banknote issued by the City of Osnabruck, in Northern Germany. The obverse features Bernicketurm, a medieval tower associated with famine and hunger - as food was distributed here in times of need. This tower was originally a part of city's defensive fortifications and stands to this day. The reverse features the coat of arms of the city. These notes are 'notgeld' or emergency money, which became common in Germany and Austria after World War I, when coins went out of circulation (as the metal was worth more than face value), and paper money became worthless.
