5 Dollars, Rhodesia, 1978

Five dollar banknote of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) printed in 1978, bearing the signature of Desmond C Grough. The obverse has the coat of arms of Rhodesia, along with the logo of the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia, with a giraffe at the bottom left. The reverse features a lion and a lioness. The Rhodesian dollar (1970-80) replaced the Rhodesian Pound (1964-70). The note has a portrait of Cecil Rhodes as the watermark. 

Rhodesia was the name given to the territory that is now Zimbabwe - it was named after British imperialist Cecil Rhodes. The colony of Southern Rhodesia was largely self governing from 1923, but was under British sovereignty. In 1965, Southern Rhodesia declared independence from Britain - the unilateral declaration of independence - which was seen as an attempt to further white minority rule. This led to a civil war between the Rhodesian government and the black nationalist movement ZANU-PF (Zimbabwe African National Union) - Robert Mugabe's party. ZANU-PF received support from the USSR and China, while Rhodesia had support from South Africa and Portugal (which governed neighboring Mozambique till 1974). Eventually, the Rhodesian government agreed to talks and Rhodesia became Zimbabwe with Robert Mugabe as the first prime minister. Robert Mugabe's socialist regime expropriated property of white farmers - leading to an economic collapse and hyperinflation. While the average citizen enjoys greater political rights, economically, they are worse off compared to 50 years back.
