5 Riyals, Iran, 1944

5 Riyal banknote of Iran, printed in 1944, featuring an image of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi - the ruler of Iran from 1941-79. The obverse features a portrait of young Reza Pahlavi in military uniform - this was his first portrait and these were the first banknotes to be issued during his reign. The reverse has an image of the Tomb of Prophet Daniel. Mohammed Reza Pahlavi acceded to the throne in 1941 - during the Second World War, after his father was forced to abdicate by the Britain and Russia for his perceived German sympathies.
