Eine Rupie, German East Africa, 1916
Eine (1) Rupie banknote of German East Africa (present-day Tanganyika - the mainland side of Tanzania). Germany had a significant colonial empire in the Pre-World War I era, including East Africa. Like other colonial powers (Italian Somaliland, British East Africa Company), German East Africa used a silver coin identical to the Indian Rupee in weight and purity. During the War, silver shortage forced the local government to print paper money - leading to this banknote. The design is simple - with text on both sides - showing it was done in a rush. Top of the obverse has the words 'Interim Banknotes'.
Size: 108 mm* 65 mm
