50 Riyals, Iran, 1974-79

  • Rs. 500.00

50 Riyal banknote of Iran, featuring the portrait of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi - the last king of Iran. The obverse of the note features a portrait of Pahlavi in military uniform, while the reverse features the tomb of Cyrus the Great - the first Persian emperor who established the Persian empire. These notes have been issued by the Bank Markazi - the Central Bank of Iran.

The Pahlavi dynasty was the last royal house to rule Iran - it was established in 1925 by Reza Shah Pahlavi - a military officer who deposed the ruling Qajar dynasty and took their place. While Iran was officially neutral during the Second World War, Reza Shah was forced to abdicate by the allies (Britain and Russia) in 1941, in favor of his son, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. Mohammed Reza modernized Iran, but his autocratic rule and perceived Western cultural influence led to unrest and he was overthrown by a popular uprising in 1979. While the 1979 revolution united leftists, Islamists and nationalists - it was the Islamic faction that eventually prevailed.
