5 Francs, Belgium, 1870s
5 Franc silver coin of Belgium, minted from 1865-1878. The obverse carries the image of King Leopold II, while the reverse has the Belgian coat of arms - a rampant lion inside a shield topped with a crown. These coins are 90% silver.
Leopold II ruled over Belgium from 1865 to 1909 - making him Belgium's longest reigning monarch. At home, he was known for commissioning public works and infrastructure. However, his brutal rule over Congo - which he governed as personal property - has made him a controversial figure in modern times.
