1 Yen, Japan, 1895
Silver 1 Yen coin of Japan, minted during the reign of the Meiji Emperor (1867-1912). The obverse has an image of a coiled dragon clutching a pearl, symbolizing strength and imperial authority. The reverse carries the denomination in Kanji (Japanese alphabet) along with the imperial chrysanthemum seal. These coins were minted from 1885-1912 - this particular example was minted in 1895 - year 28 of the reign of the Meiji Emperor. These coins remained legal tender till 1914 - Japanese government formally demonetized silver coins that year to prevent an outflow of silver from the country.
These coins were minted during the Meiji era, a period of rapid modernization and industrialization of Japan. This period saw Japan prevail in the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). The latter victory caused a worldwide shock as this was the first time an Asian nation had beaten a European power. Japan has a convention of naming the entire era after the reigning monarch. Thus, Meiji, Taisho and Showa are not just names of emperors, but also the periods during which they reigned.
