1 Dinar, Libya, Gaddafi
1 Dinar Libyan banknote, issued in 2004 (pre-revolution), featuring Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The reverse of the note carries an image of a mosque in Tripoli. This was a smaller note compared to the earlier series, from the 1990s - with some changes to the design.
Gaddafi was a colonel in the Libyan army, and came to power after overthrowing King Idris in a coup in 1969. He nationalized Libya's oil industry, which brought prosperity to the country. Gaddafi was known for his eccentric habits: he often stayed in a tent, even during foreign visits, he had an all female bodyguard unit, and travelled with a supply of Libyan soil to stand on. Gaddafi was deposed in 2011, via a US backed civil war, assisted by its NATO allies - pushing Libya into chaos and terror. His self styled title was 'Brother Leader', while US President Ronald Reagan referred to him in more colorful words - 'The Mad Dog of the Middle East'.
