Silver one rupee coin of Awadh Princely State, minted in the name of Mughal ruler Shah Alam II (1761-1805 AD). These coins were minted from 1787-1819 AD - several years after the death of Shah Alam. The obverse of the coin carries the date as per the Islamic calendar, while the reverse carries a fish (symbol of Awadh), a flag, and the regnal year (number) of Shah Alam. After the death of Aurangzeb, local governors such as the nawab of Awadh, Hyderabad and Bengal became practically independent, although they professed nominal loyalty to the mughals. In the mid-1700s, the East India Company also started to emerge as a political power. In 1765, following the Battle of Buxar, where the British prevailed against the forces of nawabs of Bengal and Awadh, Awadh became a British protectorate, to serve as a buffer state between British territories (Bengal and Bihar) and the Maratha Empire. In 1801, Awadh became a princely state. These coins are from the period where Awadh transitioned from a British protectorate to a princely state.
