3 Dokdo (Dhabu), Kutch, Pragmalji/Victoria, VS 1925/1869 AD (169.1)

  • Rs. 800.00

Copper 3 Dokdo (also called Dhabu) coin of the Indian Princely State of Kutch, issued in the name of Pragmalji II and Empress Victoria. Like other coins of Kutch, the obverse is in Hindi/Devnagari, while the reverse is in Urdu. The obverse has the value (3 Dokdo) and a Katar (dagger) inside a circle and the date in Vikram Samvat outside the circle. The word 'Samvat' is at 11.00 clock while the year is at 1.00 clock. The reverse has its legend in urdu and the date as per the English calendar - 1869 AD. This is among the first machine struck coins issued by an Indian state and is one of the multiple varieties minted in that year - see picture 4 (this coin is in the middle).

Dhabu was a unique unit of currency of the region - equal to 3 Dokdo or 1/8 of a kori (silver coin). This coin was equal in value to the British Indian half anna coin and was also among the largest coins to be milled in India, with a weight of 19.5 grams (approx). The coin is a little larger than the British India silver rupee and noticably thicker.

Weight: 19.5 grams (approx)

Diameter: 32.9 mm (approx)
