Ratlam was a princely state in the Malwa Agency of Central India during the British era. The kingdom of Ratlam dates back to the seventeenth century. The state became a British protectorate in 1819. During the British era, the ruler of Ratlam was entitled to a 13-gun salute. Ratlam state merged into the Indian Union in 1948. The modern day town of Ratlam is an important railway junction.
