Uma Rupia, Portuguese India, 1912

  • Rs. 4,400.00

Silver 1 Rupee (Uma Rupia) of Portuguese India - Republic of Portugal, minted in 1912. Instead of the head of the ruler, as was the custom earlier, this coin carries the head of liberty. In 1908, an assassin shot dead King Carlos 1 of Portugal and heir apparent, Luis Phillipe - in what was called the Lisbon Regicide. The two killings led to the ascension of King Manuel II, who reigned for just 2 years before he was deposed and Portugal was declared a Republic.

These coins were identical in weight and silver content to the previous Uma Rupia coins and silver rupees of British India.

These coins were minted in small numbers (just 300,000) making them scarce compared to other Portuguese or British India coins. Read more here
