1 Rupee, Ceylon, 1956
1 Rupee banknote of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) printed in 1956. The note is blue in color with a multicolored underprint. The left side carries the seal of Sri Lanka - a lion holding a sword inside a roundel with Ceylon written in Sinhala underneath. The watermark window is on the right side - again, the lion of Ceylon. The reverse of the note features steps leading up to a Buddhist temple in Anuradhapura - the capital of ancient Sinhala Kingdom and a key site of Buddhist heritage in Sri Lanka. The note has inscriptions in English, Sinhala and Tamil. This is a change from the earlier design of 1952, when Queen Elizabeth featured on the notes. The lion emblem symbolizes national symbols replacing the colonial symbols.
These were the last of the 1 rupee notes printed in Sri Lanka - this series was in print from 1956-1963. This particular note was the first of the series, and was printed in July 1956. The Sinhala Only Act, which made Sinhala the only official language of the country, was also passed in 1956 - the pro-Sinhala policies eventually led to the Sri Lankan civil war (1983-2009). This note marks an important point in Sri Lanka's post independence history.
