1 Mark, Germany, 1914

1 Mark banknote of German Empire, printed in 1914. These notes were issued shortly after the outbreak of World War I (then known as the Great War), and were a replacement for silver coins - which people started to hoard for their intrinsic value. The obverse of the banknote carries the denomination, date, and the issuing authority (Imperial Debt Administration), while the reverse carries the imperial eagle along with the crest shield. The eagle was a popular motif of the Roman empire, and features in emblems of multiple western nations including US, Russia, and Germany.
