1 Paisa, Sayala State, Series D & E (1940-45) – tezbid

1 Paisa, Sayala State, Series D & E (1940-45)

  • Rs. 1,500.00

1 Paisa cash coupons of Sayala State, issued from 1940-45. The obverse bears the coat of arms of the Sayala state, and the denomination in local script, the reverse is blank. These are coupons/notes of Series D and E - both of these are listed in major catalogues.

These coupons/notes were substitute for the 1 paisa (1 quarter anna) metallic coins of British India - as metal was in short supply during the Second World War. Another sign of this shortage was the replacement of the one-quarter anna British Indian coins with the much smaller 1 pice (hole coin - hole to save extra metal) during the war.

Sayala was one of the smaller princely states, in the Kathiawar region of present day Gujarat. Founded in 1751, it had a total area of 575 square kilometers, and a population of 13,500 (1921 census). Sayala merged into India in Feb 1948.

Size: 56 mm* 30 mm

Both of these are very rare, and extremely hard to get in a set.
