The 1/12 Anna

The 1/12 Anna was the smallest coin to be minted during the British Uniform coinage era (1835-1947). The 1/12 anna was 1/3 of a paisa, or 1/192 of a rupee and was also the smallest coin to be minted by the British. These coins were first minted in 1835 in the name of the East India Company. From 1862, these coins bore the image of Queen (later Empress) Victoria, followed by Edward VII, George V and George VI. As small denomination coins, these were used more frequently (and roughly) compared to the higher value silver coins - hence few examples survive in good condition.
