5 shillings, South Africa, Elizabeth II (First Portrait)

  • Rs. 3,000.00

Silver 5 Shillings of South Africa, with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (First Portrait) on the obverse and a springbok (antelope) on the reverse. Springbok is a well known symbol for South Africa, and the country's cricket team is also called the springboks. The reverse of the coin was designed by Coert Laurens Steynberg - and his initials CLS can be seen on the bottom right of the coin.

South Africa was a self governing dominion of the British Empire, so its currency carried a picture of the British ruler. From 1910-1961, South Africa used the South African Sterling, which was equal in value to the British Pound Sterling. Five shillings were equal to 1 crown, which was 1/4 of a Pound Sterling. These coins are 50% silver.
